Chapter 15 - Lucca

For the first time in ages, Lucca had trouble getting up and going to his morning shift. His body was tingling with satisfaction. He felt far too comfortable and warm. There was something so natural about waking up to find Gina in his arms. Dragging himself out of that bed felt like one of the hardest things he’d ever had to do.

Lucca was glad Gina seemed to have enjoyed their date last night, even though things hadn’t exactly gone according to plan. He’d intended for the night to be a re-do of what Gina’s first time should have been, but he’d gotten distracted. He hadn’t even remembered to light the candles he’d set up beforehand. Oh, well. As long as Gina was happy, that was what mattered most.

He got ready for the day as quickly and quietly as he could. It was around five o’clock in the morning, and he didn’t want to wake Gina. He brewed himself a fresh pot of coffee, making enough for Gina and Mason as well. He poured his and Mason’s shares into a couple of travel mugs and left Gina’s in the pot. She could always heat it up when she woke up.

Lucca realized he should leave Gina a note. Waking up to find him gone would probably freak her out, given what had happened the morning after they’d last slept together. He intended for the note to be nothing more than a brief explanation of his absence, but it wound up being embarrassingly sappy. Oh, well. He didn’t have time to rewrite it. Lucca placed it on the bedside table next to Gina, giving the sleeping woman a quick kiss on the forehead before heading out the door.

Lucca remembered the weatherman saying it would be extra cold out today, so he decided to take his truck instead of walking. Before long, he reached the water tower, which was located on a hilltop at the entrance to town. It was his and Mason’s preferred place to conduct their patrols.

The sun was beginning to rise over the horizon, bathing the city in a soft glow. Once Lucca climbed the ladder and reached the top of the tower, every corner of the town would be visible. It was a beautiful location to watch the sunrise. As an added benefit, it made surveying the entire town much easier. He and Mason would notice immediately if Diego’s pack launched another attack. The only downside was that the tower’s high altitude made it bitterly cold this time of year.

Lucca climbed the ladder with one hand, holding his and Mason’s mugs in the other. He wasn’t surprised to find that Mason was waiting for him when he reached the top. Even when he was exhausted, his friend was always punctual.

“Morning,” Lucca called out.

Mason merely nodded, covering his mouth with his hand as he yawned. “Morning,” his friend said drowsily.

Lucca knew bringing that extra coffee was a good idea. He held out the beverage, nudging his friend when he didn’t notice it right away.
